No US aircraft are assigned, although the base has a very important role providing support for flights across the Atlantic for all branches of the Department of Defense. During Desert Shield/Desert Storm Lajes had a number of KC-10As in residence to refuel cells of fighter aircraft deploying nonstop from the USA to the Middle East.
